Blocking is a form of fascism, its an admittance you dont have the compassion to bridge the gap of misunderstanding- And thats OKAY! Just so long as there is honesty afoot. I am unsettled by the dog pile.

@d60010 For sure!! I read the diary entry from the individual from the womens webring I think it was, and I think it sucks that they are willing to talk about people like that, and undeniably TERF language- I just have mixed feelings about the way I am seeing people respond. Ideally, you would want people to continue being open regardless- I have a lot of prior experience with this same attitude, its no good

I believe in diplomacy beyond anything else. Its how we quell and avoid violence, its how we improve bad bureaucracy, and it will be how we help people like "TERFs" understand us. Whats the alternative, segregation? What kinds of things will that lead to?

@d60010 I hope that is able to express how I feel a tad better. Just makes my heart hurt seeing the fighting.

i understand your point but you're equating blocking someone on an internet site with segregation which is kind of overkill imo. it's not the responsibility of trans ppl to try to be diplomatic with a terf on the internet when most people come here to chill. someone choosing to block a terf to protect their peace isn't a form of fascism.

@d60010 Its an issue that is magnificative imo- I express it the way I do because I am watching the world around me self sort based on these parameters. I would prompt people to reflect further on this, and ask if the behaviors displayed are healthy.

And did you know the terf is a human, and doesnt deserve to be so misinformed? And then, a community leader, calls to block them? Cementing their ignorance- Thats not right. It is OUR responsibility, mine and yours.

if i saw someone irl who was saying the same hateful things as the person who was called out, i would probably take a minute to help them realize what they said was wrong and try to help them see how, but on the internet there are just too many people like that. i don't feel responsible to chase down every grown adult online who has become entrenched in bigotry and try to convince them to change.

all i have the energy to do here is to try and protect the people who are the targets of said bigotry. "and did you know the terf is a human" yes, and as a human myself i have no pity for people who choose to be hateful towards other humans. you said yourself you had prior experience with their attitude, and i can tell that's why you're so empathetic towards their situation.

d60010's avatar d60010 4 weeks ago

personally, i think you have more of a responsibility than i do to try to help them see how they have been misinformed. i have no experience being in those circles so i have no way to know how to even begin untangling the lies they have convinced themselves of. and again, about blocking. different people will chose to do different things. for people who are the target of hate, i think they have the right

d60010's avatar d60010 4 weeks ago

to block anyone at any time for their wellbeing. i've blocked accounts for less. this is a website and not everyone will choose to use this platform in the way that they conduct their day to day life.

When I said I had prior experience with their attitude its dealing with ineducates from school, not that I frequented those circles. I resent in a way that thats the lense youve read my words with, I just would like to see a more constructive environment- this has all been over someones diary post from last year which is further disappointing to me

I don't want to wonder if my expressing myself today regarding all this could make me a terf as well. I lament saying anything in the first place, I noticed a handful of people unfollowed and I dont mind, its just bad habit building to not make the decision to inform each other. Thats what a community is.

i'm sorry for misinterpreting you. i don't think showing empathy for a terf makes you a terf. i also don't think you should feel bad for expressing your thoughts on this, you have a right to your opinion and there's nothing wrong with that.

but i don't think anyone is wrong for choosing to block this person over that post. the tone i got from the diary post is that they aren't open to confrontation or criticism of their beliefs at all. even if they have changed their mind since then, it's better to be safe than sorry and no one is going to be harmed by being blocked.

For the person in question, it's not just the fact they're clearly a TERF. It's also the level of condescension in their writing as well as the use of ableist slurs. That's just not someone who is not willing to change (especially considering it's clear people have tried communicating with them prior). I totally understand that we need to have compassion to bridge the gap, but it goes both ways.

All forms of bigotry are also ingrained within each other. You can't be trans exclusionary and NOT hold white supremacist beliefs. Like d60010 mentioned, the only way you can deal with hatred and bigotry (which is what it is--full stop), is in person where a safe, personal space is available to both parties.
