I started picking my fingers when I was around 12, definitely a high stress time of life. Over the years I have gotten it under control for the most part. I still do it but not to the extent that it's noticeable or disruptive. Keeping my nails very short actually discourages me from doing it, but I only started keeping my nails super short all the time because of the typewriter. I am glad you have found a way out!

I have to take the nail clippers to the rough or loose skin around the edges of the nail or I *will* idly pick at them. Maybe a professional manicure is my next step.

I’ve always been an anxious nail biter/skin picker. I have considered getting a manicure to see if that would help break the habit, but my nails are so short that it seems not allowed. Like, am I going to annoy some poor manicurist with my stubby canvas?

@oopsiedoodle i think you should just go if you think it'll help!!! that's what did it for me, as you can see... years of not going because i was embarrassed but then once i was forced to just rip off the bandaid (metaphorically) by someone else buying me an appt it fixed everything... there's some message here about how we allow others to treat ourselves more than we allow ourselves to... #thisisdeep
