I'll do another one of these since it's relevant to recent dev work for an upcoming release--The favicon! In March 1999, Microsoft released Internet Explorer 5, which supported favicons for the first time. Originally, the favicon was a file called favicon.ico placed in the root directory of a website. It was used in Internet Explorer's favorites (bookmarks) and next to the URL in the address bar.

Parsing favicons from 1999, 2000... their usage was quite rare. It appears that the adoption wasn't really incorporated until tabbed browsing came along 2002-2004 (to help distinguish tabs through iconography). Furthermore, early IE only looked at the server root (http://domain.com/favicon.ico), so individual user sites couldn't have their own favicons.

Today's Did You Know about those 88x31 banners: The size traces back to Netscape’s 1995 Netscape Now! promotion, which rewarded webmasters for displaying an “authorized” browser badge on their site. In the Wayback Machine, the website shows that the button appeared on Netscape’s own site in 1995, and GeoCities picked up these in 1996.

Your luhluh_solo3.gif at the top of your page (in the neocities site preview window) kinda looks like the Blind boss from Zelda: A Link to the Past, which gave me flashbacks to trying to beat that boss without the proper weapons.

This is probably one of the coolest sites I've seen on Neocities! I'm mainly a Mac guy and the only older Windows OS I've ever really used was Windows XP, so it's super cool being able to mess around with 99 in a web browser of all things!

Thank you! I've basically lived in a barrage of VMs during this development: Chicago, Windows 3.1, 95, Neptune, 98, 2000 and ME. I'm trying to create a user experience where you dont need to boot up an emulator, and envision a parafictional what-if OS where Windows 98 was delayed an extra year to bridge to NT. The new update, which is TBD, will really knock your socks off methinks.

Aframe question: Instead of using a heavy physics library (like CANNON.js or ammo.js, which can be super buggy and bloated), I ended up writing a custom collision component attached directly to the player's camera rig. It queries nearby invisible boundary boxes (represented as basic A-Frame boxes with a specific class) and uses basic Axis-Aligned Bounding Box (AABB) intersection math to resolve overlaps by pushing...

the player back along the axis of least penetration. For fast movement, it switches to a Swept AABB raycast to prevent the camera from clipping/phasing through walls. For complex 3D GLTF models, I have an auto-collision component that waits for the model to load..

all the images are from backrooms wikis and stuff (as well as i guess 4chan where the original backrooms pic and description came from), but im making my own little plot and stuff with it. i noticed the wikis dont seem to pay tribute enough to the playrooms or the poolrooms or the cookie-cutter neighborhoods and other liminal dimensions that i thought were agreed on, so imma tweak my version of it to fit that lol

It was supposed to be Notepad, Internet Explorer (with pages I repaired from 1999 in archive.org) and MS-DOS. Then it grew to Display Properties, Date/Time Settings, and so on and so forth. Some of the starting code was built off github repos, and some were jettisoned as we learned the design systems were off. Lots of VM referencing. There is some documentation in https://win99.dev/devblog/ but it needs updating.

Back in March/April of 2025 I was first experimenting with Internet Explorer 5/6 inside Windows 99, with the possibility of going back in time without feeling like you were in the present, which is a dilemma of modern web dev. More than 14 months later I am still hard at work at this and getting closer to something that feels right. There have been some breakthroughs. Stay tuned and please keep sharing the OS :)
